I love the story of the Israelites defeating the Amelekites in battle. It is always interesting to me that Moses’ hands needed to be raised in order for the Israelites to win and I have wondered the significants of this. The notes in my Bible made a great point reminding me that we need to lift up our leaders. They are only human and cannot do it alone. Too often we expect perfection out of our leaders and assume they should be better than everyone else. The truth is, a good leader cannot do it alone. They need the help and support of those they lead. And, most importantly, they need our prayers. Whether they recognize it or not, they need our support.
Here! Here!
I was struck at how quickly they were to begging to be put back into slavery so they could have the comfort and security of “the known”. So they could have the perceived comfort and security of thinking you know where your next meal is coming from. They forgot all about the horrendous nature of slavery and were willing to put themselves back there for some perceived sense of security. Boy, does that not ring true for the entirety history of human nature! We claim we want freedom from bondage, but when we finally get it, we see how scary it is. How much faith it requires. How much risk is involved and the desire for the perceived security of bondage lures us back. We see it in civilizations and we see it in our own lives. Being set free is scary because we lose control. Whatever we have been enslaved to, whether it be the approval of others, drugs, alcohol, the perfect reputation, our job, etc…when we break free from it, it is very scary because it had been a crutch, it had been a control mechanism. It had been an idol. Breaking free from those chains requires an extraordinary about of faith in the goodness of God. It’s so very scary at first. “The known” is gone. But God didn’t call us to live in “the known” (as Francis Chan points out so wonderfully in the balance beam video). He has called us to a life of love and grace which I’m finding tends to be synonymous with risk and adventure.
I needed to read your comment tonight to give me a little peace. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
