Once again, there is a lot of information in the three chapters of Acts we read today. There is no clearer picture of God’s grace than the conversion of “Saul the persecutor” to “Paul the Apostle”. He is proof that Christ’s sacrifice is greater than any sin. It is also proof that anyone’s life, no matter how bad, can be changed by the Holy Spirit to be used by God for His glory. God’s grace is sufficient to cleanse us and allow us to be used by Him.
The part that stands out to me is God’s conversation with Ananias. Can you imagine God telling you to go help someone who had been killing all your friends? Imagine God going to Ann Frank and telling her to go help Hitler…that he had changed his ways. What!? That would be my reaction! But Ananias trusts the Lord. He must have been petrified, but believing that God is good, he went out to Saul/Paul completely in faith.
How many times does God ask us to do something not even remotely as terrifying as that, and we shrink back in fear? Or we think, Oh there’s no way he could do that! Think back to Ananias. He might just be my new hero in the faith.
No doubt. We tend to put people in boxes based on our perception. Truth is, our perceptions don’t mean jack! One of the things I used to hate hearing at my most recent previous employer is that “people don’t change”. That’s a load of crap! God is able to change people and He does it everyday! When God tells us to trust Him, He means it!
People do change. All the time – by the amazing grace of God.
