We went over quite a few feasts in today’s reading. One of the notes in my Bible said the following:
“Feasts played a major role in Israel’s culture. Israel’s feasts were different from those of any other nation because, being ordained by God, they were times of celebrating Him, not times of moral depravity. God wanted to set aside days for the people to come together for rest, refreshment, and remembering with thanksgiving all he had done for them.”
Never thought about the difference in the feasts of the Bible and those that happened in other cultures. This is a good example of something we don’t do enough, celebrate the blessing we have from God. Let us all take some time to celebrate all our many blessings today.
God puts all these laws in place regarding cleanliness, and Dino, you touched on this a bit a few days ago, but we have to remember that these people lived in the desert. It was dirty. It was bloody. And they didn’t just have a shower to jump in at the end of the day. Who knows how often they actually bathed. I mean, think about a windy day in the desert. You get dirt in crevices you never knew existed. So all these rules really were to teach them about hygiene because they really didn’t know that blood and other bodily fluids carry disease. And they wouldn’t think to bathe, because at the time, it wasn’t common knowledge that washing up killed germs.
I am also learning that I need to not read these passages and eat at the same time. It kinda turns my stomach. Just sayin’.
The celebration of feasts is one reason why Tim and I always joke about converting to Messianic Judaism. They celebrate all the feasts! 🙂
I hadn’t even thought about the difference between their feasts and the feasts of the other cultures. So interesting.
