While I am glad we are going through the entire Bible this year, I am not thrilled with the speed we are going through some of these books. Colossians is one of the books we could spend weeks discussing, but unfortunately we are covering it in a single day. The book is one of the letters Paul wrote to the early church in Colossae.
The big thing that stood out to me today was in Colossians 1:28 where it says, “28 He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ.” Paul’s main goal is to bring the believers in Colossae to a mature relationship with Christ. He did this knowing how much more their lives would be enriched. This should also be our goal, knowing how much more we can experience by investing our time in building a mature and fulfilled relationship with our savior.
So much here and only 1 day! Ack! But this is what stood out to me in Chapter 2:
“Don’t handle this. Don’t taste that. Don’t touch this.”? 22 After these things are used, they are no longer good for anything. So why be bothered with the rules that humans have made up? 23 Obeying these rules may seem to be the smart thing to do. They appear to make you love God more and to be very humble and to have control over your body. But they don’t really have any power over our desires.”
But they don’t really have any power over our desires… I love how the CEV puts that. No need for me to really expound upon that.
And one more from Chapter 4:
“5 When you are with unbelievers, always make good use of the time. 6 Be pleasant and hold their interest when you speak the message. Choose your words carefully and be ready to give answers to anyone who asks questions.”
Choose your words carefully…how often do we just spew some talking point we’ve heard our pastor say or some author put into a book. We have been given the Holy Spirit to be able to discern what words will best penetrate the hearts of those around us. People are looking for authenticity and they can smell a talking point from a mile away. We have the power of the Holy Spirit. Why do we walk around like we don’t have him?
