2013 Day 37 – Exodus 32-34, Proverbs 6

Trust

I couldn’t sleep so I decided to have an extra early time of Devotions today. The passage that stood out to me on this early morning was the second part of Exodus 33:19, …I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. We are not entitled to know God’s will, but we must trust and know that he has a perfect plan. It is never easy to fully trust anyone. We all know people are ultimately capable of letting us down. For that reason we must know that God wants what is best for His kingdom. We don’t need justification from Him, we just need to know He’s got it under control.

Wisdom

The last part of today’s reading in Exodus was a great reminder to keep the Sabbath. There are definitely some practical reasons to keep the Sabbath, such as restoration both mentally and physically. However, we must not forget that this is our weekly opportunity to be restored spiritually. Yes, we are to spend time with God daily, but without focusing and reflecting on God with deliberate intent, it is difficult to set the proper direction for our lives. The Sabbath should be our time to course-correct our path each week. It is no wonder that we arrive at a place sometime in the future and can’t figure out how we got there. The application of today’s reading for my life is to take the Sabbath each week to deliberately review where I’ve been and properly set my path for the coming week (not the coming year). It’s easy to set lofty goals, but if we cannot focus on the here and now, we will miss that mark every time.

Glory, God

As I read this mornings passages in Exodus, I kept thinking how tedious it was just reading it. Then I realized how tedious it must have been to actually build it. I like to do woodworking when I have a spare moment and I know how much effort it takes to build something of quality and precision. How much more it must have been to build something to the glory of God? It’s not enough to do things for God as a “check mark” and to simply say we completed a task. We must remember when we do things for a righteous God we are doing it for His glory. We must take the time and effort to bring glory to Him and be a reflection of His perfection.

Grace, Mercy, Redeemer, Salvation

This morning’s read was a tough one, but it is necessary to fully understand God’s grace. Without the full understanding of God’s law, it is difficult to grasp the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross for our sins. This is not the last time we will read about the law. In fact, it will become far more tedious than today’s read, but I challenge you to read it with eyes that point back to God’s righteousness and the mercy He has on us in showing grace through the redeeming power of Jesus’ blood.

2013 Day 33 – Exodus 18-20, Proverbs 2

Obedience

Sorry for the late post, but its been one of those Saturdays where you start early and the next thing you know you are having a crappy day and you finally realize its because you failed to make your first priority time in God’s word. Now that I’m here, my day feels much better. Anyway…

In today’s reading, we are following Moses as he receives timely advice from his father-in-law. Moses has been attempting to be all things to the people of Israel and as Jethro observes, he steps in and suggests that Moses spread some of the burden of responsibility to other righteous and respected men of Israel. What stood out to me was, once Moses was able to get away from the day-to-day tactical aspects of his time, he was finally able to spend time with God to receive the Ten Commandments. This is an applicable example to me because it made me realize how much God will not trust me with more if I cannot take the time to lift myself out of urgent, yet not important, tasks and follow His leading to what really is important. God wants me to do the things that matter most, not just the things that fill up my time. My prayer today is for God to calm my spirit and reveal to me what matters most to Him so I can do that above all else.

Compassion, Servant

I love the story of the Israelites defeating the Amelekites in battle. It is always interesting to me that Moses’ hands needed to be raised in order for the Israelites to win and I have wondered the significants of this. The notes in my Bible made a great point reminding me that we need to lift up our leaders. They are only human and cannot do it alone. Too often we expect perfection out of our leaders and assume they should be better than everyone else. The truth is, a good leader cannot do it alone. They need the help and support of those they lead. And, most importantly, they need our prayers. Whether they recognize it or not, they need our support.

What stood out to me in today’s reading was how much the passages in Exodus and Psalm 23 fit together. Whenever I read Psalm 23 I find it to be very calming. I figured the best thing to do is share the entirety of Psalm 23:

1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.

Grace, Mercy

There were a lot of plagues in today’s reading and the thing that stood out to me through it all was God’s mercy. I know, it seemed like He was pretty relentless with the Egyptians, but He kept giving them chances to listen and obey Him. For example, if you look at the plague of hail, He did not destroy all of the crops. He allowed the wheat and spelt to be spared. When Pharaoh once again disobeyed God, He went ahead and destroyed the rest of the crops through the plague of locusts. This is a great example of God’s mercy to us. God will continue to show us grace and mercy through the sin in our lives, but if we continue to disregard His forgiveness and grace He will eventually allow our sin to destroy us.

Power

What stood out to me today was how God made Moses seem like ‘God’ to Pharaoh. Exodus 7:1 said, Then the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet. Moses’ authority came directly from God and He made Moses someone Pharaoh would listen to; almost as if he were a peer. God is able to make us have whatever authority is necessary to accomplish His will. We must realize how powerful we can be when we allow God to work through us.

In our reading in Psalm 22, I found the first part of verse 1 very interesting. It was the same verse Jesus quoted when He was hanging on the cross, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? What is really interesting is how much David prophesies in this Psalm and accurately describes how much Jesus suffered on this cross.

2013 Day 25 – Exodus 1-4, Psalm 21

Power, Trust

As we begin reading the story of Moses, the part that stood out to me is found in Exodus 4:11-12, 11 The Lord said to him, “Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the Lord? 12 Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” Too many times I limit God’s ability to do great things in my life because of my own perceived limitations. The reality is God created me and can do more than the limitations that exist in my life. When Moses argued with God, he was reminded that God can do anything. The truth is I need that same reminder each day. God is greater than me and is able to anything He wants because He is God.
