Holy Spirit, Honor, Obedience

Our bodies were created to honor God and to be in a relationship with Him. When we accept Christ into our lives, the Holy Spirit lives in us. We are no longer our own, we are one with Christ. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, 19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own. 20 you were bought with a price. Therefore honor God with your body. We are not expected to be perfect, but we are expected to do all we can to honor God with our bodies in all we do. Just as a temple is holy, so are we supposed to be holy as a dwelling place for the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

2015 Day 146 – 1 Corinthians 5

Obedience

Allowing sin to enter and stay in your lives is not a good thing. In 1 Corinthians 5:6 Paul says, Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough? A little bit of yeast in a batch of dough goes a long way, just as a little bit of sin in our lives tends to work its way into more sin. While the expectation is not that we need to be sinless, we are supposed to fight deliberate sin in our lives.

Salvation

We all want to be liked by others. No matter what your personality style, you want to be liked and not judged. But in the end, it does not matter what other people think of us; it only matters what God thinks. In 1 Corinthians 4:3-4 Paul tells the Corinthian believer this, 3 I care very little if I am judged by you or by human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. 4 My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. Our conscience should always be clear because of Christ’s sacrifice for us. While we will never be perfect, nor will we ever stop sinning because of our nature, God’s grace for us is all that matters. What others think of us, or even what we think about ourselves, does not matter.

Holy Spirit, Purpose

When we accept Christ into our lives God chooses to live in us through the Holy Spirit. We become the temple the He lives in 1 Corinthians 3:16 says, Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? By recognizing God’s presence in our lives we are able to do all God intended through us.

Knowledge, Salvation, Wisdom

God gave us the Holy Spirit so that we could begin to understand who God is. We do not need to be educated to understand God, we simply need to look to the Holy Spirit and ask for knowledge and wisdom about who God is. In 1 Corinthians 2:12 Paul says, We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. The reality is we will never fully comprehend all that God has done for us until we are finally in the presence of God. But with the Holy Spirit we can at least begin to grasp our need for God and all that Christ has done in providing salvation to us all.

Obedience, Relationship, Servant

Today we begin the first letter from Paul to the Corinthian church. The purpose of the letter was to identify issues in the church, propose solutions, and to teach believers how to live Christ-like lives in a corrupt and lost society. In the first few chapters, Paul takes the opportunity to address their problems and to offer truths about what we really are without a relationship with Christ. In the final verse of this chapter Paul says in 1 Corinthians 1:31, Therefore it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.” He chose us, not because we were great and had a lot to offer Him, but because He is able to use anyone and anything for His glory. We are to consider it a privilege to be identified as children of God and to be found worthy to be His servant.

Faith, Peace, Trust

In today’s reading we see a lot of turmoil between the new believers and the Greeks of Ephesus. Because the “Way” (this is what the early Christian sect was called) was such a new and disruptive faith, people felt threatened. Especially those who made a living by selling people false hope and deceit. This chapter sets the stage for the majority of Paul’s letters to the early churches of the region. Most of these churches experienced tremendous amounts of pressure and persecution because of their faith. It is important to realize there are still Christians around the world that face similar persecution. The hope of Jesus is no less disruptive than it was 2,000 years ago. While we have allowed this message to be watered down in the United States, there are many believers in other parts of the world that still experience persecution. Let us not forget them and be in prayer for their strength, safety, and peace as they remain faithful servants of Christ.

Holy Spirit, Peace, Power

When we lack control over our emotions, we tend to do stupid things. But Paul urges the Thessalonians to never tire of doing what is right. Paul say in 2 Thessalonians 3:13, And as for you, brothers, never tire of doing what is right. The same advice goes to us. Never tire of doing the right thing even when the world pushes you into doing what is wrong. Remember to turn to God and the Holy Spirit for guidance and strength.

Encouragement, Love, Relationship

Paul gives a very strong blessing to the Thessalonian church at the end of 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17, 16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God the Father, who loved us by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, 17 encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word. There is no sweeter blessing and encouragement than what comes from the Lord Jesus Christ and God Himself. While many of us seek the encouragement and acceptance of others, it does not match or compare to what God is capable of giving to us through the Holy Spirit. When the rest of the world seems to not be interested, remember that God loves us more than we could ever imagine.

Faith, Holy Spirit, Obedience, Trust

In this second letter to the Thessalonian church, Paul wanted to clear up confusion about Christ’s second coming. Many of these believers in the church thought Christ would be coming soon because of the amount of persecution they were facing. But Paul reiterated the time of His coming was unknown and not necessarily imminent. Paul simply encourages these early believer to trust that God is in control. In 2 Thessalonians 1:8 Paul says, God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you. It is not our job to judge others or retaliate when we feel persecuted. It is our job to be obedient and listen to God’s leading through the Holy Spirit in our lives. We are to life boldly, but we are also to live lives that are under control and obedient to God’s will and purpose.
