Psalm 121

Faith, Hope, Trust

When we are at our lowest point, it’s easy to wonder where God is. Psalm 121:1-2 says, 1 I lift up my eyes to the hills – where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. If we believe God created the heavens and the earth, then we must remember God is with us no matter the circumstances. Nothing is too big that God can not fix it.

Comfort, Peace, Protection

There are few things in life that are certain. One thing we can count on with certainty is that God is with us always and He always answers us when we call. Sometimes His answer is no or wait, but He never ignores us. Psalm 120:1 says, I call on the Lord in my distress, and he answers me. Our comfort comes from knowing God is always with us. When we feel the most alone, it is comforting to know God is there.

Psalm 119

Blessings, Obedience, Truth

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible. It is a beautiful Psalm whether you break it into small chunks or take the time to read it all the way through. The major theme of the Psalm is to remind us God’s word is wonderful and true. If we remain obedient to God we have the ability to achieve real happiness. Psalm 119:1-2 begins with 1 Blessed are they whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord. 2 Blessed are they who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart. If we remember the Bible is the only real source of truth, we will find everything we need to live a pure life. Everything else is opinion and ways people find to justify their sinful choices. Don’t be fooled.

Faith, Hope, Trust

If we truly know God is with us always, we should never walk in fear. Psalm 118:6 says, The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? The first part of this verse states the obvious. But the last sentence shows us the practicality of what the author is saying. What can man do to me? It’s an honest question with an obvious answer: Nothing if God doesn’t allow it. And if God allows it, it is to fulfill His perfect plan, which He chose to include me in! What a privilege and honor it is to be included in God’s plan. Let us not take that lightly.

Praise, Salvation

In today’s short Psalm we read of the Lord’s great love for us, which reminds us of His worthiness of our praise. In Psalm 117:2 it says, For great is His love towards us, and faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord. Let this Psalm be a reminder to us all that God’s love and gift of salvation is for all people. Regardless of who they are, if they believe in Him and accept the gift of salvation, then they can be in the presence of the King for all eternity.

God, Praise, Thankful

When we praise God it is because we are thankful for being saved from certain eternal death. Psalm 116:2 says, Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live. Worship is a thankful response to God. It is not a repayment to Him. An attempt to repay God for salvation is futile and can never be enough. It is a gift and worthy of our praise.

Glory, God, Praise

Too often we ask God to bless us and in turn give us the glory. In the best case, we may ask God to give us the glory while giving Him the glory at the same time. We may give God the glory for blessing us, but we get our own praise in the process. An example would be when we ask God for help with work so that we can be noticed and rewarded. There is nothing wrong with impressing people around us as long as we are certain God is not lost in the process. Psalm 115:1 says, Not to us, O Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness. Before we ask God for anything, let us make sure we are doing it for the right reasons. We should also make sure God is praised and all glory goes to Him.

Power

When we observe the power of nature all around us (waves in the ocean, wind through the tress), we should be reminded of God’s great power. Psalm 114:7 says, Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob. To tremble at God’s presence is to recognize God’s power and authority and our frailty by comparison.

Praise, Thanksgiving

The scope of God’s love is prevalent in the way we loves and provides for all of us the same; rich, poor, oppressed, and free. God’s love does not discriminate and it never rests. And because of this we should never tire of praising Him for his provision. Psalm 113:3 says, From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised. Just as God never tires of providing for us, we should never tire of remembering where the provision comes from and in turn never tire of praising God for it.

Compassion, Gracious, Righteousness

Especially in the darkest night light shines the brightest. Psalm 112:4 says, Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for the gracious and compassionate and righteous man. If we concentrate on being a light in this world, it doesn’t matter how dark the world is around us because our light will shine through. Being a light has its challenges, but if we are to be labeled gracious, compassionate, and righteous, then our ability to be a light that shines through really matters.
