2013 Day 175 – 2 Kings 19-21, Psalm 90

Relationship

Today we read more about King Hezekiah, and while he was by many standards a pretty good king, he made a very big mistake. He allowed the Babylonians access to see all that was in his kingdom, which would later in history prove to be a very big mistake because it allowed the Babylonians access to information for making plans for future conquest. This lesson applies to our personal lives as well. While it is good to have close friends, we must guard our hearts and minds to only allow a few select people to be that close. More importantly, we should never allow others to take the place of God in our lives. His presence and influence should never be superseded by anyone or anything. God is sacred and should be the first and most important relationship in our lives.

2013 Day 167 – Jonah 1-4, Psalm 84

Forgiveness, Grace, Mercy, Obedience, Relationship, Repentance

Today we read the story of Jonah. Jonah is very much like most of us. God has a plan and wants to use us to fulfill His plan, but many times we fight Him on it. We make excuses and find ways to avoid doing what we know He wants us to do. In the end, Jonah was finally obedient to God and when God blessed Jonah’s effort by turning the people of Nineveh from their evil way, Jonah became resentful of God for allowing the people of Nineveh to be forgiven. We can sometimes be like this too. There are people in our pasts who have hurt us or caused pain in our lives and God has blessed them. This is sometimes a hard pill to swallow, but it is God’s prerogative to forgive who he chooses to forgive. It helps to remember that God forgave us too. None of us is exempt from a sinful life and all of us need His mercy and grace to come into His presence.

We also read Psalm 84 today. The beginning of verse 10 is one of the most beautiful passages I have ever read, Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere. We are nothing without God’s presence in our lives. If we could only be in God’s presence for a single moment, it would be enough. Thankfully God desires for us to be in His presence on a constant basis. It is up to us to take advantage of that desire and choose to be with Him.

Obedience, Relationship

This part of the story of the kings of Israel is always sad to me. It seems like the leaders are confused about how to lead God’s people. Instead of working in the basics and following God’s laws, they choose to mix what they know is truth with what they hope to be true. The lesson for us is to know that following God and having a relationship with Him is not that complicated. It is simply a matter of obedience and trusting God to be all we need.

Believer, Relationship, Wisdom

While I am glad we are going through the entire Bible this year, I am not thrilled with the speed we are going through some of these books. Colossians is one of the books we could spend weeks discussing, but unfortunately we are covering it in a single day. The book is one of the letters Paul wrote to the early church in Colossae.

The big thing that stood out to me today was in Colossians 1:28 where it says, “28 He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ.” Paul’s main goal is to bring the believers in Colossae to a mature relationship with Christ. He did this knowing how much more their lives would be enriched. This should also be our goal, knowing how much more we can experience by investing our time in building a mature and fulfilled relationship with our savior.

Relationship, Trust

David’s life is coming to an end as we finish the book of 2 Samuel and he is taking some time to reminisce about his past and his mighty men. These men had very little in common other than their loyalty for David and their military expertise. The important thing to notice is, while David takes time to honor his men, it is as much a testament to his leadership skills as it is to their abilities. David is the epitome of a great leader. People follow great leaders before they follow great causes. There were many times when these men were on the run from people wanting to kill them because of their loyalty for David, but it never mattered to them. It’s a true sign of great leadership.

Knowledge, Obedience, Relationship

When we focus on the things Christ commanded of us, there is not enough space in our lives to please our sinful nature. Romans 14:14 says, Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh. By covering our minds, and in turn our lives, with Christ, there is no room for the evil desires of our heart. When we study who Christ is and how we can exemplify Him, we reflect him through us. May each of us strive to be more like Christ, and not necessarily what other people tell us to be like, but by studying His words and following His commandments.

Relationship

Today we finish up the story of Sampson. The thing that caught my attention the most was how Sampson needed to have his eyes removed and placed in confinement to be in a place where God could once again use him. This is how God sometimes gets our attention. He removes the distractions in our lives so we can be clear in how He needs us to be used for Him. Hopefully nothing this drastic ever happens to us, but this is why God wants an authentic relationship with Him, so we know exactly how to be used by Him for His perfect plan.

Holy Spirit, Relationship

Today we begin the story of Sampson. While Sampson was a good leader and judge of Israel, he also allowed himself to be influenced by the desires of his heart. These desires did not always line up with God’s desires. This is a great lesson for leaders as they gain influence and power. There will always be something to tempt you; sometimes it is someone of the opposite sex, sometimes it’s money, or it could be something else that will cause you to stumble. Whatever it may be, if we fill our heart and mind with an honest relationship with God and allow the Holy Spirit to guide us in all we do, we can rely on God’s strength to help us.

Faith, Obedience, Relationship, Trust

I love the story of Gideon because it reminds me of a couple of things about our relationship with God. First, it is a relationship and it is ok to sometimes question God. We should always do it with respect and reverence, but it is ok. Second, because it is a relationship, God is patient with us and our human nature to doubt. God is not offended by us when we ask question as long as we are obedient to Him in the end. God has made each of us with unique personalities and character traits. Some of us plow ahead when told to do so, while others are more methodical about our approach. But ultimately, God has made us to work together to accomplish His perfect plan with each of us bringing our individual strengths to the table.

Relationship

Sorry for the delay today. I totally lost track of time. Today as we begin the book of Judges, it astonishes me at how quickly the Israelites turn from God. It’s a lot like the way I am at times in my relationship with God. No matter how many times I find myself closer to God, it seems there is an equal number of times where I find myself drifting again. But just like the Israelites, God is always there waiting on me.
