2016 Day 358 – Psalm 49

Our lives are limited and not eternal by nature. It it through the sacrifice of Christ that we are granted eternal life. Psalm 49:8-9 says, 8 The ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough – 9 that he should live on forever and not see decay. Back in the days of this Psalm, slaves could only be set free by being redeemed or ransomed (someone paying the price); it was a costly endeavor. But through Christ, He paid the price and set each of us free if we simply accept His gift of eternal salvation.

Salvation, Strength

David is faced with trouble in Psalm 28, but he knows God is his source of strength and the only one who provides true salvation. In Psalm 28:8 David says, The Lord is the strength of His people, a fortress of salvation for his anointed one.

Forgiveness, Salvation

David knew forgiveness of sin was a big request. In Psalm 25:11 he asks God for forgiveness even though he knew his sin was great, For the sake of your name, O Lord, forgive my iniquity, though it is great. Even in the day of David, he knew the Messiah was going to fix all this and become the perfect and final sacrifice, which Christ fulfilled. We are forgiven and free because of Christ and His love for us.

In today’s reading, it is interesting to see David’s request of God in Psalm 19:13, Keep your servant also from willful sin; may they not rule over me. Then will I be blameless, innocent of great transgression. We all sin, it is part of our nature, but willful sin require premeditation and a decision to sin. David asks God to keep him from willfully choosing sin. We must do the same. We will never be perfect in this lifetime, but we have the ability to control what we choose to do in order to glorify God. By God’s grace we are holy in His eyes because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ regardless of the sin in our lives.

The way we know our eternity is secure is through salvation that can only come through Christ Jesus. 1 John 5:12 says, He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. Once we have Christ living in us, we can rest assured of our salvation.

At times, we may think God moves slowly when it comes to answering our prayers. But it is important to remember that God is not on our timeline, nor does He move according to our will.  2 Peter 3:9 says, The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to parish, but everyone to come to repentance. God moves in accordance with His will and timeline to give all of us time to find Him. It may seem as though people are no longer looking for God, but He is not about the numbers. He is simply waiting on all who are willing to believe and come to Him.

Before Christ came and died on the cross for our sins, men were not allowed to go directly to God, they had to go to a High Priest who would then intercede for them. This all changed after Christ. In 1 Timothy 2:5 Paul explains, For there is one God and one mediator between God and me, the man Christ Jesus. Christ became the real-time mediator for us with God. He covered our sins to allow us to be in God’s presence. Without Christ we would still be slaves to the law. But through Christ the law was fulfilled and he covers us. Praise Him for our gift of eternity and the ability to have a true relationship with God..

Eternity, Grace, Love, Mercy, Salvation

There is nothing any one of us can do to deserve eternal life. God’s grace is how we have come into salvation. In Ephesians 2:8-9 Paul says, 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. God ultimately gives us the gift of salvation because He loves us and He knows we were incapable by our own power to live a life worthy of eternal life. It is a gift from Him which does not require anything of us. We may feel like we owe God something for this gift, but we don’t. His grace is sufficient.

Philemon 1:16 describes all of us as believers in Christ: no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother. Before we knew Christ and trusted in Him for our eternal salvation, we were slaves. After, we became magnitudes better than slaves; we became brothers. Nothing can bless us more than that.

2016 Day 203 – Acts 28

Obedience, Repentance, Salvation

As we finish the book of Acts, Paul finally made it to Rome and was able to share his experience and the truth about Jesus. Some heard and believed, while others heard and did not believe. In Acts 28:26-27 Paul quotes from the prophet Isaiah 6:9-10, 26 ” ‘Go to this people and say, “You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.” 27 For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’ “ Paul’s example of obedience shows us it is our job to share the gospel of Christ, not to convince people or to judge them if they don’t believe. Only God can change a person’s heart.
