Today’s reading is summed up in the first two verses in Leviticus 19:1-2, The Lord said to Moses, “Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: ‘Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy. Everything that is described and commanded in today’s reading is meant to bring the Israelites closer to God. Christ’s sacrifice on the cross bridges that gap for us, but the commandment in verse 2, ‘Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.’ still holds true to us today as believers. We must keep all this in mind in everything we do.

9When you harvest your grain, always leave some of it standing along the edges of your fields and don’t pick up what falls on the ground. 10 Don’t strip your grapevines clean or gather the grapes that fall off the vines. Leave them for the poor and for those foreigners who live among you. I am the Lord your God.
I love this passage. You are teaching important principles to both sides of this equation. Those who own the fields learn that it is their obligation to help the poor, but the best way to help them is to allow them to work to meet their needs. It teaches the poor that even though they are less fortunate, work must still be done to provide for themselves and their families. There is dignity in work, so the poor are still helped without having their dignity stripped and the landowners remain generous.
Excellent thought! I never looked at that passage that way before.
