2013 Day 157 – Colossians 1-4, Psalm 77

While I am glad we are going through the entire Bible this year, I am not thrilled with the speed we are going through some of these books. Colossians is one of the books we could spend weeks discussing, but unfortunately we are covering it in a single day. The book is one of the letters Paul wrote to the early church in Colossae.

The big thing that stood out to me today was in Colossians 1:28 where it says, “28 He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ.” Paul’s main goal is to bring the believers in Colossae to a mature relationship with Christ. He did this knowing how much more their lives would be enriched. This should also be our goal, knowing how much more we can experience by investing our time in building a mature and fulfilled relationship with our savior.

2013 Day 156 – 2 Samuel 21-24, Psalm 76

David’s life is coming to an end as we finish the book of 2 Samuel and he is taking some time to reminisce about his past and his mighty men. These men had very little in common other than their loyalty for David and their military expertise. The important thing to notice is, while David takes time to honor his men, it is as much a testament to his leadership skills as it is to their abilities. David is the epitome of a great leader. People follow great leaders before they follow great causes. There were many times when these men were on the run from people wanting to kill them because of their loyalty for David, but it never mattered to them. It’s a true sign of great leadership.

I keep noticing a pattern with David. He knows how to be competitive and he knows how to win. However, he never loses sight of the people he loves. No matter what people do around him, even when they betray him, he still loves them and mourns for them when they are gone. We saw this with Saul and in today’s reading we saw it with his son Absalom. This is one of the reasons I think God calls David “a man after His own heart”. God never stops being righteous and He never stops wanting us to do the right thing. But when we sin and the consequences of our sin causes us pain, and sometime death, He is sad and He does mourns for us as well.

Protection

While David was far from perfect, he spent his entire life trying to be someone who was worthy of being called a man after God’s own heart. Some people would think it is enough to be of good character and to have integrity to keep them from harm. The problem is neither of those things provide protection from the evil on this earth. The only thing it provides protection against is from having a bad relationship with God. This is the most important thing we could work towards anyway. Just be mindful that God cares more about our well being than we can imagine; He is there for us even in death.

David was known as a man after God’s own heart. But even David was not perfect and sinned. God is gracious to forgive, but there are always consequences to sin. In 2 Samuel 12:13-14 it says, Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” Nathan replied, “The Lord has taken away your sin. You are not going to die. But because by doing this you have shown utter contempt for the Lord, the son born to you will die.” Sin is sin and we all commit sin in our lives. We should all feel God’s grace and mercy and move away from it as quickly as possible. But the consequences of sin can be great especially when we allow it to drag out and refuse to repent from it.

Even after everything David went through at Saul’s hand, he still chose to honor Saul’s grandson who was Jonathan’s son, Mephibosheth. David’s treatment of Mephibosheth showed David’s integrity as a leader who accepted responsibility for showing love and mercy to those who needed it most.

Obedience

In 2 Samuel 7 we see David wanting to build a place of honor for the ark of God. But God tells David it is not necessary. As God explains it, His ark has been in a tent since the day the Israelites left Egypt. God is not concerned with the things of this world. He does not need the same physical things we think we need. He is concerned with the hearts of men and their obedience to His commands. We should remember this when we think we need fancy buildings and creative worship “experiences” in our churches. God doesn’t need or want any of those things. If we are available to Him with open and obedient lives, God will use us more than any cathedral ever could.

I know I’ve written about Proverbs 30:8-9 before because I really like the way it challenges me and convicts me, Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the Lord ?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God. As Americans we strive for more and more. I love how these verses challenge us to strive more and more for God instead of our own sustainability.

2013 Day 146 – Philippians 1-4, Proverbs 29:15-27

I’m a little disappointed that our reading plan today took us through the entire book of Philippians in a single shot. There is so much information in this letter from Paul and it is difficult to summarize it all. If I had to pick one verse that stood out to me today it would be Philippians 4:8, Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. This verse is a great summary of where our focus should be in our lives. I feel we tend to focus on the negatives too often; mostly because it’s easy to pick things apart. We should spend our time finding the good and work on multiplying it in all we do.

2013 Day 145 – 1 Samuel 29-31, Proverbs 29:1-14

Today we learn more lessons from David. In 1 Samuel 30:6 it says, David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the Lord his God. Even when the world seemed to be against David, he still found strength in The Lord. One of my biggest weaknesses is I look for strength through others. While there is nothing wrong in drawing strength and encouragement from others, the only strength I really need is that of The Lord’s.
