2012 Day 290 – Titus 3

Grace, Love, Mercy

Paul starts the second paragraph of chapter 3 in verse 3 saying why we could not help ourselves, At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. Those are some pretty strong words, but when I think about it, I really can’t argue with Paul in his description of me, for the most part. But then Paul goes on to say what God has done for us, 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. If we haven’t read it somewhere else before, Paul reminds us here of God’s amazing grace to us. Paul talks about God’s kindness, love, mercy, and generosity to us through His Son and Holy Spirit. Nothing we have is our own. It is all from God because of His grace.

2012 Day 288 – Titus 1

Grace, Mercy, Obedience, Relationship

In today’s reading we begin our first of three days in the small book of Titus. This letter was written approximately 64 AD to a Greek man named Titus who was in charge of supervising and organizing the churches on the Island of Crete. The letter is intended to be an instruction manual for how to do his job. Most of this first letter talks about what the leaders are supposed to be like. I can’t help but read the description and compare it to myself. I wonder if I am a man who is worthy to be called a leader in the church. Through God’s mercy and grace I am saved, but do have have the necessary character to lead others in the faith? This is a good question for me to ask myself daily and to constantly remind myself of the character that is expected of me as someone who is supposed to be leading others. God doesn’t expect perfection, but he does expect an authentic relationship and obedient heart for Him.

2012 Day 283 – 1 Timothy 5

Mercy

Verses 24 and 25 in this chapter do a very good job of saying “don’t judge a book by its cover”, 24 The sins of some men are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. 25 In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not cannot be hidden. It is never our job to judge anyone, either good or bad, and we should always take the time to understand people before we make a call about who they are and what they are about.

Grace, Mercy

Gods grace is all I need to be righteous in His eyes. However, He did not show me grace for me to accept it selfishly. He gave it so that I could have His example and show it to others. Verses 15 and 16 says, Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners–of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. I often feel like Paul when he says he is the worst of sinners; not because of the magnitude of my sin, but because I know I am and always will be a sinner. God’s grace could never be applied to my life just once. I need it every day of my life, which He gives to me freely. In turn, I must show His mercy and grace to others as He has done it to me.

Mercy, Relationship

At first glance, verse 9 is disconcerting, Who can say, “I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin”? I know I sin daily and I know that I am rarely without sin in my life. However, what is not said in this verse is we have a way to attain a pure heart. Jesus’ provided that way. Through the regular confession of sin we are continuously being cleansed. God provides forgiveness of our sin by his mercy when we ask for it. The thing I am missing from my life is the regular confession and repentance of sin as a part of my regular talks with God. It is through that process and continuous building of my relationship with God that I can rely on His moment by moment cleansing of my life.

Compassion, Love, Mercy

Psalm 145:8-9 stood out to me today, 8 The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. 9 The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made. I am so thankful for a God who is slow to anger. He shows me compassion and gives me mercy regardless of whether I deserve it or not. Praise God for loving me.

Mercy

God will always listen to our voice when we need His mercy. Psalm 116:1-2 says, 1 I love the Lord, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. 2 Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live. God is always responsive to us when we call on Him. When we are discouraged, God is always near and listening to our prayers to give us what is best for us according to His perfect plan.

2012 Day 228 – Acts 22

Grace, Mercy, Salvation

There were no specific verses that stood out to me today, but the overall story reminded me of something important. When Paul was standing before the Jews, he had their attention because he was able to tell them the story of how he was saved. It is a compelling story that they could relate to as Jews. However, Paul took it a step further and said God called him to reach out to the Gentiles, which exposed their pride, and caused their anger to flare. The thing that stood out to me is how easy it is to tell the loving and easy part of the gospel, but God has called us to be bold. It’s not always easy to tell someone that their life will end in death if they don’t accept God’s mercy and grace, because they have to admit they actually need it. We have to be bold to share the whole gospel with everyone because this is what God has called us to do.

Grace, Mercy, Salvation

In a relationship, you either tend to be aligned in your values and moral, or you at least respect them. In our relationship with God, we must be aligned with Him when it comes to how we feel about evil. In Psalm 98:10 it says, Let those who love the Lord hate evil, for he guards the lives of his faithful ones and delivers them from the hand of the wicked. If we love God, then we will hate evil; even, and especially, the evil that exists in us. We all strive for a righteous and pure heart, but we are imperfect beings who need God’s grace to make us righteous. So, when our imperfection appears in our lives, we should feel pain when from its existence because of how far we are from the righteousness of God. Praise God for His mercy and grace in forgiving us and allowing us to be pure in His sight.

Mercy

God is able to turn bad situations into good for our lives. Psalm 60:5 promises us that God is able to save those He loves, Save us and help us with your right hand, that those you love may be delivered. It is not always the way we want delivery, but He knows what is best for us. We must have faith and trust in Him to know what is best for us.
